The unit of automation is the workflow: something happens (an order arrives, an invoice lands, a form submits), and the steps that used to be a person's copy-paste become a pipeline — read, transform, write, notify. Done well it removes the swivel-chair work nobody was hired for.
What separates automation from a script is operability: retries on failure, a log of what ran, alerting when it did not, and a human-readable picture of the flow. A process nobody can see is a process nobody can fix at 9pm.
