# Topical authority

> Being the site that covers a subject completely — many well-linked pages on one topic beat one page on many topics.

Search engines infer expertise from coverage: a site with thirty coherent, interlinked pages about prompt security reads as an authority on prompt security in a way a single brilliant page cannot signal. Authority is judged per topic, not per domain — a small site can own a narrow subject outright. This is the logic behind the pillar-and-cluster pattern: one page covering the breadth, surrounded by pages covering each piece of it, all cross-linked.

The consequence for planning is depth over sprawl. Ten pages that complete a subject outrank thirty that each touch a different one. It is also the honest argument for glossaries and written-up experience: covering a topic thoroughly is what an expert would do anyway, and the site ends up shaped like the knowledge it claims.
