# Title tag

> The HTML title — the blue headline in search results and the strongest single on-page relevance signal.

The `<title>` element does three jobs: it tells the search engine what the page is about, it is the headline a searcher decides to click on, and it names the tab a user returns to. That makes it simultaneously a relevance signal and an advertisement — a title that reads 'Home' fails both. Google truncates around fifty to sixty characters and rewrites titles it dislikes (roughly a third of the time, usually when the title is stuffed, vague, or mismatched with the H1).

Good titles put the differentiating words first where they survive truncation, name the thing rather than the company on inner pages, and match the page's actual promise — because a title that oversells earns the click and then the bounce, which is worse than no click at all.
