# Solidity

> The main language for writing smart contracts on Ethereum and the other chains that run the same virtual machine.

It looks like a curly-brace language and reads deceptively like one, which is a trap for developers arriving from elsewhere. The execution environment is what is actually different: every operation costs money, storage is expensive enough to change how you design data, external calls can re-enter your function before it has finished, and there is no runtime to catch you.

The ecosystem does most of the load-bearing work. Audited standard implementations for tokens and access control are the default starting point precisely because writing them from scratch has a long history of going badly, and the development frameworks give you local chains, fuzzing and gas reporting as a matter of course.
