# SERP

> Search Engine Results Page — the page Google shows for a query, now a mix of blue links, AI overviews, map packs, and ads.

The SERP is the real estate being competed for, and it is no longer ten blue links. A modern results page can hold an AI overview, a map pack, featured snippets, 'people also ask' boxes, videos, images, shopping units and ads — the classic links land wherever space remains. What 'ranking first' means depends on which features the query triggers: for a local query the map pack is the top slot; for a definitional query the snippet is.

The practical consequence is that rank tracking alone says little. A page can hold position three and still sit below the fold, or lose position while gaining traffic because it entered a feature. Measuring visibility means watching which SERP features exist for the queries that matter and which of them you occupy.
