# OCR

> Optical character recognition — turning images of text into real text, so scanned invoices, receipts and forms become data instead of pictures.

Classic OCR matched glyph shapes and broke on handwriting, skew and coffee stains; modern systems read text in context, which is why they handle the documents the old tools choked on. The output that matters is not text but structure: vendor, line items, total, date — fields a system can act on.

In business terms OCR is the last mile of the paperless office: the invoice photo becomes a payable record, the delivery note becomes stock. The remaining work is validation — the model reads 'l' for '1' at exactly the rate where totals still need a sanity check before money moves.
