Search engines return ten links; answer engines return one answer. What gets quoted is the page that states a claim plainly enough to lift verbatim: a definition that stands alone in a sentence, a list of steps, a comparison table, a named review. Long introductions, hedged claims and marketing adjectives are exactly what a model summarises away.
The practical surface is mundane rather than exotic: honest structured data, a visible NAP and author, dates that say when the content was last touched, fast pages that do not paywall the crawler behind megabytes of JavaScript, and clean markdown or plain-text endpoints for tools that prefer them. AEO rewards the same hygiene good technical SEO always did, plus quotability.
