# n8n vs Make vs custom code: 2026 automation stack

No-code automation is brilliant until it isn't. Here's the line where n8n / Make stop saving money and custom code starts — and how to tell which side you're on.

Automation tooling has turned tribal — n8n people, Make people, code people. It shouldn't be. The right tool depends on volume, complexity and how critical the workflow is. ## Make: start here for simple connections

Make (formerly Integromat) is the fastest way to wire "when X happens in app A, do Y in app B". Huge connector library, visual builder, no servers to run. The catch is pricing: you pay per operation, so a chatty, high-volume workflow gets expensive — and once logic branches in three directions, the visual canvas turns into spaghetti.

## n8n: the middle ground that scales

n8n is the sweet spot for a lot of teams: open-source, self-hostable, and far cheaper at volume because you're not billed per operation. It handles real logic — code nodes, branching, error workflows — and you keep your data on your own infrastructure (a [GDPR](/glossary) plus). The trade: you now own the hosting, updates and uptime. That's a small ops cost, but it isn't zero.

## Custom code: when the workflow becomes the product

At some point a workflow stops being glue and becomes a core part of the business. That's when custom code wins: full control over reliability (retries, [idempotency](/glossary/idempotency-key), [message queues](/glossary/message-queue)), version control, real testing, and no per-run ceiling. It costs more upfront, but a critical flow processing thousands of runs a day is cheaper and safer in code than in a visual tool you can't fully test.

4. Data sensitivity: sensitive data you can't send to a SaaS → self-hosted n8n or custom.

## Where AI fits
