# Hungarian Payment Gateway Comparison 2026

Four payment gateways, Hungarian-market reality check. Which we pick for which job, with fee math and integration pain points.
A Hungarian webshop needs HUF + SimplePay. A Hungarian fintech with EU ambitions needs Stripe + SCA. An experiment wants Revolut Business (zero-integration speed). This is the real-money breakdown of how each plays in production.

## SimplePay (OTP)

The default for any Hungarian consumer webshop. Native HUF, BankKártya support, integrates with every ShopRenter / Shopify theme. Fee: ~1.5% + 30 HUF per successful transaction. Integration: a day if you've done it before; four days if not.

> **NOTE:** SimplePay 3DS handling is finicky · the v2.1 API requires server-signed IPN, not client confirmation. If your framework defaults to client-side POST, you'll get silent failures.

## Stripe

The EU default for scale. Native SCA + 3DS 2.x, Stripe Billing for subscriptions, Stripe Connect for marketplaces. HUF supported but not first-class · reconciliation to Hungarian accounting takes extra lift. Fee: 1.4% + €0.25 for EEA cards, 2.9% + €0.25 for non-EEA.

## Barion

Hungarian alternative to SimplePay, with e-wallet + card. Better developer docs than SimplePay, cleaner API. Not as ubiquitous in consumer trust · users see SimplePay more often and trust it reflexively. Fee: ~1.1% + 15 HUF per card tx.

## Revolut Business

Zero-integration option: generate a payment link, send via email, no embed. Good for B2B invoicing, coaching, consulting. Not appropriate for consumer checkout.

- SimplePay: ~80 HUF fee (0.4%)
- Barion: ~65 HUF fee (0.32%)
- Stripe EEA card: ~345 HUF fee (1.72%)
- Revolut Business link: ~100 HUF (2% + 35 HUF)

> **TIP:** Always dual-wire SimplePay + Stripe on Hungarian retail. When one gateway has an outage (it happens 2-3× a year with SimplePay), Stripe catches the traffic. 3-5% revenue saved per incident.
